Alnico Disc Magnets

What Are Alnico Disc Magnets?

Alnico disc magnets are flat, cylindrical permanent magnets. Their dimensions are typically defined by diameter and thickness. They can be customized to fit different installation spaces and magnetic circuit designs. Their simple and compact structure makes them suitable for various components that require round magnetic elements. Alnico disc magnets are also available with different magnetization directions to meet application requirements for pole positions and magnetic field orientation.

Magnetization Options

The magnetization direction determines the position of the magnetic poles on an Alnico disc magnet and how the magnetic field behaves within an assembly. Since magnetization depends on the magnet structure and magnetizing fixtures, it should be confirmed during the quotation stage. The following are common magnetization options for Alnico disc magnets.

  • Axial Magnetization: The north and south poles are located on the two flat faces of the disc. The magnetic field runs through the thickness. This is the most common magnetization option.
  • Diametral Magnetization: The magnetic poles are located on opposite sides of the circumference. The magnetic field runs across the diameter.
  • Custom Magnetization: Multipole or other specific magnetization configurations can be evaluated according to application requirements. You can provide your magnetic field requirements or technical drawings. Our engineers will assess the feasibility of a suitable solution.

Applications of Alnico Disc Magnets

Alnico disc magnets are suitable for various magnetic components that require a round magnet structure.

Sensors and Measuring Instruments: Used in Hall sensors, speed and position detection systems, measuring instruments, compasses and other devices. These applications benefit from stable magnetic output that is less affected by temperature changes.

Audio Equipment: Used in guitar pickups, bass pickups, microphones, speakers and other audio equipment. Alnico magnets are valued for their warm tonal characteristics and stable magnetic output.

Holding Fixtures and Clamping Systems: Used in workpiece holding, magnetic assemblies and positioning fixtures designed for high-temperature environments.

Educational and Research Equipment: Used in laboratory experiments, physics demonstrations and educational kits that require consistent performance, safety and durability.

Alnico Disc Magnets FAQ

  • What Is the Maximum Operating Temperature of Alnico Disc Magnets? Depending on the grade, the maximum operating temperature can reach approximately 550°C. This is significantly higher than that of neodymium and ferrite magnets.
  • Do Alnico Disc Magnets Require Electroplating or a Protective Coating? Alnico disc magnets generally do not require electroplating or additional coatings because Alnico has good corrosion resistance. Specific surface treatment requirements depend on the operating environment.
  • Are Alnico Disc Magnets Prone to Demagnetization? Alnico magnets have relatively low coercivity and are more susceptible to demagnetization when exposed to strong opposing magnetic fields. Proper magnetic circuit design and correct usage help maintain their magnetic performance.
  • Should I Choose Alnico or SmCo Magnets for High-Temperature Applications?  Alnico offers excellent temperature stability at a lower cost, while SmCo provides higher coercivity and stronger resistance to demagnetization. The best choice depends on your operating conditions and magnetic performance requirements.
  • Why Are Alnico Magnets Commonly Used in Guitar Pickups? Alnico magnets are widely used in guitar pickups because their magnetic characteristics are valued for producing warm, rounded tones. The tonal characteristics can vary depending on the Alnico grade and pickup design.

Other Types of Ring Magnets

Disc magnets are available in different magnetic materials to suit various application requirements.

Neodymium Disc Magnets: Suitable for applications requiring high magnetic strength in a compact size.

Ferrite Disc Magnets: A cost-effective option for general-purpose magnetic applications.

SmCo Disc Magnets: Suitable for applications requiring high-temperature performance and strong resistance to demagnetization.
