NEODYMIUM DISC MAGNETS
High Performance Disc Magnets
Neodymium disc magnets are a form of permanent magnet with a flat, circular shape. They are relatively thin and have a high diameter-to-thickness ratio. Because of their design, these magnets are ideal for delivering consistent and effective magnetic field distribution in various applications, especially those requiring a broader contact area and uniform magnetic force.
Disc Magnets in Standard Sizes & Custom Options
The size of neodymium disc magnets determines their usefulness for different applications. Depending on the exact application requirements, selecting the appropriate size guarantees optimum magnet performance and avoids problems caused by mismatched sizes, whether too big or too tiny.
- The diameter ranges typically from 1.00 mm to 70.00 mm (0.04 to 2.76″).
- The thickness ranges from 0.500 mm to 35.00 mm (0.02″ to 1.38″).
- Adhesive force ranges from 0.0031 KG to 140.00 KG.
*Disc Magnets are neodymium magnets with a height less than their diameter, while Bar Magnets have a height more than their diameter.
During customization, we ensure that each magnet’s dimensions are exact and give rigorous tolerance limits. The specific tolerances are:
Diameter tolerances range from
- 1.00 mm to 25.00 mm (0.04″ to 1.00″), tolerance is ±0.10 mm (±0.004″).
- 25.00 mm to 50.00 mm (1.00″ to 2.00″), tolerance is ±0.20 mm (±0.008″)
- 50.00 mm to 70.00 mm (2.00″ to 2.76″), tolerance is ±0.30 mm (±0.012″)
- Thickness tolerance: ±0.10 mm applies to all sizes.
These tolerances and dimensions may be adjusted based on a specific application’s operating environment and design requirements.
Magnetization Pattern and Direction
Depending on the purpose, disc magnets may be magnetized axially or diametrically. Axially magnetized magnets are mostly utilized in devices that need magnetic force at the two ends of the magnet, such as motors and sensors, where a strong north-south pole distribution ensures steady magnetic output. Diametrically magnetized magnets help spin equipment and magnetic couplings because the magnetic force is evenly distributed around the edge of the disc, resulting in a magnetic field around the perimeter. These two magnetization technologies provide tailored magnetic solutions for various precision equipment and industrial applications, assuring optimal performance.

Disc Magnet Features & Characteristics
-
- What are disc magnets? Disc magnets are flat, round permanent magnets commonly used in various applications due to their compact size and efficient magnetic field.
-
- What is the difference between axially and diametrically magnetized disc magnets?
Axial magnetization: Magnetic poles are along the central axis of the disc, which is ideal for applications requiring magnetic force along the two flat surfaces.
Diametric magnetization: Magnetic poles are along the diameter and are suitable for applications needing magnetic fields around the edge.
- What is the difference between axially and diametrically magnetized disc magnets?
-
- What are disc magnets used for? They are used in motors, sensors, speakers, magnetic couplings, and medical devices, offering powerful magnetic fields in a compact form.
-
- Are disc magnets strong? Yes, mainly, neodymium disc magnets are powerful compared to other types.
-
- How should I handle disc magnets safely? Handle with care to avoid injury. Strong magnets can pinch fingers or break upon impact. Use protective gloves.
-
- Can disc magnets withstand high temperatures? Neodymium disc magnets tolerate temperatures up to around 80–230°C (176–446°F), but their strength decreases at higher temperatures.
-
- How do I identify the north and south poles? Poles can be identified with a compass or marked on the magnet. In axially magnetized magnets, poles are on the two flat faces.
-
- What coatings are used on disc magnets? Standard coatings include nickel, zinc, and epoxy, which protect the magnets from corrosion and wear.
Disc Magnets in Other Designs
In addition to neodymium disc magnets, TOPMAG carries a wide selection of other disc magnet materials to meet a wide range of uses and applications:
Ferrite Disc Magnets are inexpensive and very resistant to demagnetization. They work great outdoors or in warmer environments. This type of magnet is best for projects where a good balance of budget and durability needs to be maintained.
Alnico disc magnets have superior temperature stability and corrosion resistance, making them great for high temperatures and long-lasting magnetic applications.
SmCo disc magnets are well known for their best magnetic strength possible and tolerance to high temperatures. This class of disc magnets is used in applications that require highly demanding field strengths yet stability at extremely high temperatures.
