Basic Knowledge of Speaker Magnets
Working Principle of Speaker Magnets
The loudspeaker magnet is the core component of a loudspeaker, typically made of permanent magnet materials such as neodymium magnets. It is responsible for generating a stable magnetic field. A magnetic field is also generated when an audio signal passes through the voice coil. According to Ampere’s law and the Lorentz force principle, this changing magnetic field interacts with the stable magnetic field of the permanent magnet, driving the voice coil and the connected diaphragm to vibrate back and forth. This vibration causes air molecules to vibrate, forming sound waves and converting the electrical signal into audible sound.
Materials for Speaker Magnets
1.Ferrite Magnets
Ferrite magnets are made by sintering a mixture of iron oxide and ceramic compounds. Their advantages include relatively low cost and high temperature resistance. To obtain sufficient magnetic driving force, they typically require a large magnet volume. Ferrite magnets are suitable for high-volume home loudspeakers, subwoofers, and public address systems.
2.Neodymium Magnets
Neodymium magnets, made from rare-earth elements of neodymium, iron, and boron, are currently the strongest permanent magnet materials, providing extremely high magnetic field strength. Compared to ferrite magnets, neodymium loudspeakers can meet the design requirements of high-end compact loudspeakers. Their advantages include precise diaphragm control, fast transient response, and clear, detailed sound. They are suitable for high-end Hi-Fi loudspeakers, car audio systems, tweeters, and flagship headphones.
3.Alnico Magnets
AlNiCo magnets are composed of rare earth elements such as aluminum, nickel, and cobalt. Before the widespread use of ferrite and neodymium magnets, they were a common choice for vintage speakers. AlNiCo magnets produce a mellow, warm tone, particularly excelling in the midrange vocals. They are suitable for vintage speakers, guitar amplifiers, and some vintage horn tweeters.
4.Samarium-Cobalt Magnets
Samarium-cobalt magnets have high magnetic strength comparable to neodymium magnets, and apart from their high price, they have virtually no drawbacks. They offer excellent temperature resistance and corrosion resistance. Beyond the audio field, they are also commonly used in ultra-high-end audio equipment for aerospace, military, and other professional domains.
